The Kit Lake Solace

OCTOBER 2026

It was a month of bait and switch on Kit Lake, my home water in central Florida’s largemouth bass country. Open promises were really closed. Help was detrimental. And the reality of our fishing, also, was not what we had expected.

With some rains, our old dock posts were sunk below the surface again. For anglers who paid attention, some stealthy approaches and straight down presentations lead to catches. Those structural obelisks combined with some moving water turned on top water strikes again.

Old Man Martin was not deterred by high winds or a lack of bug activity. With a McNally Frog popper, he found a nice bass well off the shore, in four feet of moving water.

In spots with the same depth of water around the lake, sporty bluegill attacked dragonfly nymphs cast on light rods near shrinking lily pad fields.

A new shrub of pickerelweed grew up in the extreme corner in Toby’s back yard. And Modelo pruned shoreline vegetation on his property, started a trend. So, around the lake, there are several spots that provide future holding potential. And the lake’s bottom was shown to anglers through a week of windy weather. As we moved slowly around the lake, the wind-blown waves provided rippled views of bottom structure.

All these, and more, developed our view of the future. Whether what we see is helpful, hopeful, or harmful, we will have to see next month.
